On Sunday 27th August the 27th annual Cornish Country Fair was held at Stithians Showground. The fair which began in 1990 at Scorrier House is a traditional country fair and aims to give the opportunity to both local people and visitors to the county a taste of country life.
The fair’s winning format has altered little since it first began but every year new and exciting extras are added to the programme. The main ring came alive with heavy horses, children’s mini Olympics as well as a parade of beagles, whilst working gun dogs amazed the crowds with their obedience. Perhaps though it is the sight of the donkey derby races that result in the most cheers – visitors are very much encouraged to join in the racing. we were delighted to once again welcome back Kernow Kys flyball demonstrations and new for this year the Fergie Fillies!
Around the showground are many other attractions ideally suited to keep children entertained throughout the day - with rare breed animals, archery, a treasure trail, Cornwall Fire & Rescue, face painting, bouncy castle and even a Punch & Judy show!
A must for any dog lover, the companion dog show continues to grow from strength to strength with increasing entries every year, more dogs can be seen at the terrier and lurcher shows and displays.
Another spectacle not to be missed is the open Cornwall & Devon tug of war competition which includes all weights for ladies and gents.
The food and drink marquee appropriately positioned next to the main ring so visitors to the show are able to relax with a drink whilst keeping an eye on the action and soaking in the country fair atmosphere.
The craft and food & drink marquees continue to grow each year offering the best from local businesses, local food is also served up in the many refreshment outlets around the show; local business can also be found throughout the showground with a vast array of wares.
Thank you to all who attended and made the show another great success, and to our members for running the show, helping to make it all happen!
